August 16th: Flying Foxes

Today was a pretty relaxed day. I went to class and in my animal behaviour practical I was assigned my first project. I must watch videos of flying foxes and record the amount of times I see a certain behaviour exhibited. It sounds easy, but after recording all the behaviour we saw (ie: movement with hands, covering face, adjusting feet, etc) it will be a huge amount of work and time. And on top of that, the videos (6 of them all about 7 minutes each) contain about 30 bats each. So I have to watch each video a million times to get my tallies correct. But I love this class and think it’s a cool project. He gave us flying foxes because he is a researcher on them and they live in high populations here in Sydney. He also said it was a harder task now because no one knows anything about them so it’s not like we are familiar with this animal like we would if we were recording dog behaviour. I went back and chilled out and napped and then went out with Emily and Bel and Deniz to Ubar. There I played billards with Danny and everyone thought my rules for pool were very bizarre…. I thought it was weird no one calls the eight ball. But o well, silly America. After Ubar we went back to Deniz’s and hung around for a while. I love the friends I have met here, they make hanging out so much fun and enjoyable.
